This bombing cleared the way for the German land army. They were met with little resistance. The Army of Poznan, the Polish army, attempted to defeat the Germans. The Luftwaffe helped to stop the counterattack. On September 19, the Army of Poznan surrendered, and the Germans imprisoned 155,000 Polish men. However, the Poles in Warsaw refused to surrender, so on September 25, the Luftwaffe bombed Warsaw, the capital. On September 27, Poland officially surrendered. Hitler signed an agreement with Joseph Stalin and split Poland. On September 3, 1939, the Allies officially declared war. (Constable)
